AI Money Is Flooding In, Even As It Cuts Telecom Jobs

Robert Hattala · August 3, 2026

01 · Article

Big week for AI news, and it is a mixed bag. Money is pouring into the infrastructure side while regular folks are losing jobs because of the same technology. Let us get into it.

AWS Just Showed the AI Spending Spree Is Paying Off

Amazon's cloud business, AWS, posted a 37 percent jump in revenue this quarter. The company is pointing straight at AI demand as the reason. Businesses are renting compute to train and run their models, and that money is landing right in Amazon's pocket.

This matters because everybody has been asking the same question for two years now. When does all this AI infrastructure spending actually turn into revenue? AWS just handed over one of the clearest answers yet. The semiconductor index is still down close to 16 percent from its peak, so not everyone is convinced, but the cloud side of the business looks strong.

My take: the picture and shovel sellers win first in every gold rush, every time. Amazon is not betting on any single AI company winning. They are just renting out the compute to whoever needs it. That is a good place to sit.

Europe Wants Seven AI Gigafactories

The EU is moving forward with plans to build seven new AI gigafactories, giant data center complexes meant to give European companies compute power that does not depend on US or Chinese providers.

Why it matters: Europe has been way behind on AI infrastructure. Most of the big models get trained on chips and in data centers owned by American companies. If the EU actually pulls this off, it changes who controls the compute that European businesses depend on.

Robert's take: I like the ambition here, but building data centers is the easy part on paper. Getting the power supply, the chips, and the talent lined up at the same time is where these plans usually slow down. I will believe it when I see the ribbon cutting.

AT&T and Verizon Keep Cutting Jobs, and AI Is Part of Why

Both AT&T and Verizon announced more rounds of layoffs, and AI automation is getting named as one of the drivers. Customer service, back office work, and network operations are all areas where these companies are leaning on AI tools to do what people used to do.

This is the flip side of the AWS story above. Same technology, different outcome for different people. While cloud providers rake in record revenue, telecom workers are getting handed pink slips.

My take: this is exactly the kind of story that should make people take AI seriously, in both directions. It is not hype when it shows up in real layoff numbers. Companies are not cutting jobs because AI is trendy. They are cutting because it is cheaper than payroll. That trend is not slowing down anytime soon.

That is the roundup for today. Money in, jobs out, and Europe trying to build its own seat at the table. More tomorrow.
