AI Proves Math, Hacks Networks, and Gets Regulated All Weekend

Even the weekend news cycle is running hot now. In the last day we got a solo hacker turning DeepSeek into an attack crew, OpenAI publishing machine-checked proofs of problems humans could not crack, California flipping the switch on its AI labeling law, and Apple drowning in robot-written bug reports. Grab your coffee, let's get into it.

One Guy Pointed DeepSeek at 460 Targets and Let It Rip

Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 detailed a hacker out of Zhuhai, China who wired DeepSeek into an open source agent framework and steered the whole operation from Telegram. The AI picked targets, dug up public exploits, and went after more than 460 internet-facing systems. It got real compromises too, including three organizations running Citrix NetScaler.

The kicker: researchers note DeepSeek happily did offensive work that Claude and OpenAI models refused. That safety gap between models just stopped being a philosophical debate and became an actual attack path.

My take: this is the cheapest cybercrime has ever been. One person, one chat app, one obliging model, hundreds of targets. If your patching plan is "we will get to it," some agent somewhere already has you in a spreadsheet.

OpenAI's Astra Knocked Out Ten Open Math Problems

OpenAI released ten proofs of previously unsolved problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science, produced by an internal model family called Astra. Every proof ships with a Lean 4 certificate on GitHub, which means a computer verified the logic end to end. One claim is a disproof of the Connes Rigidity Conjecture, which is a big deal in some very smart circles.

Why it matters: Lean certificates take the trust question off the table. Either the proof verifies or it does not. These verify. And the talent flow says plenty on its own, since 2026 Fields Medal winner Jacob Tsimerman is taking leave from Toronto to join OpenAI.

My take: benchmark scores can be gamed. A machine-checked proof of a problem that sat open for decades cannot. This is the most convincing AI research result I have seen all year, and I do not say that lightly.

California Turned On Its AI Labeling Law

SB 942, the California AI Transparency Act, became operative August 2. If you run a generative AI service with a million or more monthly California users, you now have to embed C2PA provenance data in your images, video, and audio, ship a free public detection tool, and let users add a visible AI label. Skip it and the state AG can come after you for $5,000 a day per violation.

This matters because California tends to set the floor everybody else builds on, same as it did with privacy. The effective date also lines up with the EU AI Act, so the big providers get to do one compliance push instead of two.

My take: watermarking will not cure deepfakes, but provenance metadata is the seatbelt of the AI content era. Cheap, unglamorous, and it will save somebody real pain. The $5,000 per day per instance math is the part that gets legal teams moving on a Sunday.

Apple Got Buried in AI Slop and Started Rationing

Apple capped how many bug reports researchers can file through Feedback Assistant and added a 30 day cool-off period, per the Financial Times, because AI-generated submissions flooded the queue. Curl and the Internet Bug Bounty hit this same wall months back. Apple is just the first trillion dollar company to formally rate-limit it.

Why it matters: security depends on researchers filing real reports and vendors reading them. When the queue fills up with plausible-sounding junk, real vulnerabilities sit longer. That is a safety problem, not an inconvenience.

My take: funny week for symmetry. The story up top has AI attacking systems on its own, and this one has AI burying the defenders in paperwork. Offense automated, defense throttled. That imbalance is the real security story of 2026, y'all.
