AI Roundup: Google I/O, Anthropic at $900B, Musk Loses

Robert HattalaMay 19, 2026

Three things shook out of the AI world this week, and they all point the same direction. This stuff is getting expensive, crowded, and lawyered up.

Let me walk you through them.

Google I/O Hits the Stage With Gemini 4.0 in the Crosshairs

Google I/O 2026 kicked off this week at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. The keynote was teed up to cover Gemini model updates and what Google is calling "agentic coding," which the whole industry reads as a Gemini 4.0 reveal.

This one matters because Google is the only shop that can really run stride for stride with OpenAI and Anthropic at scale. They have the data centers, the chips, the search distribution, and the model team. If Gemini 4.0 lands hard, the race tightens up real quick.

My take: I'm watching for two things. First, can the agent stuff actually run a real workflow without falling on its face. Second, pricing. If Google undercuts the frontier labs on tokens, that changes a whole lot of build versus buy math for folks running production workloads.

Anthropic Reportedly Working a $30B Round at a $900B Valuation

Anthropic is in talks to raise $30 billion at a valuation north of $900 billion. No term sheet signed yet, but the numbers behind it are why investors are leaning in. Q1 ARR is over $44 billion, which is roughly 80x year over year. More than 1,000 customers are spending a million dollars or more a year.

That is not a startup anymore. That is a category-defining business with PwC, Blackstone, and Goldman as anchor tenants.

My take: I have been saying for a year that Claude is the model my own dev team reaches for when the work has to actually ship. The enterprise numbers say I'm not the only one. The interesting question now is whether $900B is the ceiling or just a way station. With ARR growing 80x year over year, I would not bet against the next round being even bigger.

Federal Jury Hands Musk a Loss in the OpenAI Lawsuit

A federal jury in Oakland ruled that Elon Musk waited too long to sue Sam Altman and OpenAI over claims they walked away from running the venture as a nonprofit. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers adopted the advisory verdict. Musk is calling it a "technicality" and says he is going to appeal.

This case was always more about narrative than dollars. Musk wants to paint OpenAI as a betrayed founding mission. The court said his complaint, whatever its merits, showed up too late to the party.

My take: I don't have a ton of sympathy for either side here. OpenAI did rejigger its structure in ways that lined up suspiciously well with where the money was. Musk did sit on these claims while building xAI into a direct competitor. The verdict feels right on the law. The story keeps going because both these guys have unlimited budgets and unlimited grudge.

What I'm Watching Next

The I/O fallout is the big one. After that, I want to see if Anthropic's round actually closes at the rumored number, or if the macro picture tightens things up. And whether OpenAI counterpunches with a model drop of their own. They usually do when Google grabs the stage.

Y'all stay sharp out there.
