A Chinese Lab Just Dropped the Biggest Open Model Ever
A Chinese AI lab released an open-weight model that's now the largest ever put out in the open. Anyone can download it, fine tune it, run it on their own hardware. No API key, no usage cap, no waiting on a vendor to feel generous.
Why it matters: the open-weight race used to be a side story next to the closed labs. Not anymore. Every time one of these drops, it resets what "good enough to build a real product on" means for free. That pressure lands squarely on the paid API providers.
Robert's take: I like this trend a lot more than I like admitting it. Open weights mean a two person shop in Austin can build something serious without a six figure API bill. The catch is you still need the GPUs to run the big ones, so "open" and "accessible" aren't quite the same word yet. Give it a year.
An AI Agent Found Critical Bugs in Bing Before the Bad Guys Did
An autonomous offensive security agent found two critical remote code execution vulnerabilities in Bing Images, both rated 9.8 out of 10 on severity. Around the same time, Nvidia and more than thirty companies, including Microsoft, IBM, SpaceX, Hugging Face, and the Linux Foundation, launched something called the Open Secure AI Alliance to build shared defensive tools.
Why it matters: we've spent two years hearing about AI agents that write phishing emails and hunt for exploits. This is the flip side. The same capability that makes AI dangerous for offense makes it valuable for defense, and it found a 9.8 severity bug before anyone got hurt by it.
Robert's take: I'll believe the "AI defends us from AI" story once it's the default, not the exception. Right now it's a research team getting a nice headline. But I'd rather have agents hunting bugs on my behalf than sitting around hoping the humans catch everything first. That ship sailed a while back.
Amazon's Betting $200 Billion and Nobody's Blinking
Amazon is on track to spend around $200 billion on AI and related infrastructure this year. Zoom out and the big hyperscalers combined are on pace to blow past $700 billion in capital spending in 2026, all chasing the same thing: enough compute to not fall behind.
Why it matters: numbers like this stopped being shocking a while ago, which is its own kind of alarming. When four or five companies are collectively spending more than most countries' GDP on data centers and chips, that's not a tech story anymore. That's an economy reshaping itself around one bet.
Robert's take: somebody's going to overbuild. That's how every infrastructure boom in history has gone, railroads, fiber, you name it. Doesn't mean AI is a bubble that pops tomorrow, it means a lot of this capacity is going to sit half used for a stretch before demand catches up. Good time to be buying used GPUs in three years, maybe.
